Red Thai unpolished long grain brick-red rice of the Red Cargo variety.
Red rice from Thailand belongs to the unrefined (unpolished) rice varieties that have retained B vitamins, iron and calcium. Red Rice from Thailand, the Red Cargo variety, is low in starch and simple (“bad”) carbohydrates, but high in fiber and protein.
Red Thai rice is a great digestive side dish and can be recommended for dieters, healthy diets and diabetics.
Since Thai red rice contains very little starch, it is impossible to cook a thick, glutinous porridge from this type of rice. Red rice will always turn out to be crumbly, with a dense structure, with a pleasant slightly nutty taste and a little “bread” aroma.
How to cook Thai red rice:
- Thai red rice takes longer to cook than Jasmine white rice – cooking time for red rice is about 30-40 minutes
- It is recommended to rinse red rice several times with water before cooking
- Boil red rice in a saucepan or rice cooker, adding 1 part red rice to 1.4 parts water
- After the end of cooking, let the red rice stand in a closed saucepan or slow cooker for another 10 minutes
- Thai red rice is delicious as a side dish with mushrooms, vegetables and meat.
